The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Somaliland Government recently opened a Desert Locust Monitoring and Pest Control Centre in Hargeisa. Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the centre is intended to act as an early warning and control base to mitigate the impacts of Desert Locusts on food security and livelihoods in Somaliland.

The centre was officially opened by His Excellency, the Vice President of Somaliland Mr Abdirahman Saylici, Hon. Eng. Abdikadir Iman Warsame, Minister of Agricultural Development and Mr Ezana Kassa, Head of Programme of FAO.

The facility will help the Somaliland Government lead in the management of future locust upsurges, better protecting vulnerable communities in the region.
